Obstetrics & Gynaecology

INTRODUCTION

The Obstetrics& Gynaecology Directorate is the second largest clinical Directorate in the Hospital. It is also an academic Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) since 1980 for the training of undergraduate students following the establishment of the School of Medicine dentistry of KNUST in 1975. The Key functions of the directorate are:  Provision of general and specialist women’s health care, Undergraduate and postgraduate medical training, Nursing and midwifery training, Research into women’s health problems.

STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP OF THE MANAGEMENT TEAM

The Directorate is managed by a 6-member management Team:

SUB-SPECIALTY UNITS

There are currently 6 sub-specialty units offering care to women in the Directorate.

  • Feto-maternal Medicine
  • Endocrinology & Infertility

An in-vitro fertilization (IVF) centre is set to become operational in 2020.

MEDICAL WARDS AND THEATER SPACES

Ward A1: The high-dependency ward for hypertensive diseases in pregnancy

Ward A1 Annex: Post-delivery observation ward for normal deliveries

Ward A2: Post-delivery ward for Caesarean sections

Ward A3: Gynaecology ward

Ward A4: Obstetric lying-in ward

Ward A5: For special Feto-maternal cases

Special Ward: For private patients and Senior Staff. It is located in the Accident and Emergency building and has its own theater and recovery ward.

Rooming-in ward: For normal, healthy Newborns who do not require NICU admission

Labour Wards There are three (3) labour wards located on

  • Ward A1
  • The NAKSA Building
  • The Special Ward in the A & E

THEATRES

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate has 3 operating rooms in the NAKSA Building, 1 operating room on the Special Ward in the A & E and 1 operating room in the Main theatre block

KEY FUNCTIONS AND SERVICES AVAILABILITY

The Directorate has five (5) Teams for emergency duty coverage, namely Teams A, B, C, D and E. Teams run 24-hr emergency cover for emergencies.

The Directorate also runs an emergency unit at the Polyclinic (Consulting Room 5) which attends to all Obstetrics & Gynaecologic emergency cases on a 24-hour basis.

Out-patient services are held in these sub-specialties for patients and clients and runs from Monday to Friday the OBGY “specialist consulting room 8” which has 9 individual consulting rooms. Other specialized clinics are schedules as shown below:

The Directorate also runs the following specialized services

  • Visual inspection (VIA/VILI)

  • Neonatal sickle cell screening

MEETINGS

Directorate meetings are held every morning of weekdays from 0830-0930hrs to take stock of the previous day’s activities and plan for the following 24 hours. In addition to this, special meetings are organized as detailed.

TRAINING, RESEARCH AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

In 1989, The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate first received accreditation from the West African Postgraduate Medical College for the training of postgraduate doctors for the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS). The first Fellow from this training, who also happened to be the first to be trained in KATH, passed out in 1994. The Directorate has since trained several Fellows of the WACS.

The Directorate is also accredited by the Ghana Postgraduate Medical College and the Ghana Postgraduate Nursing College for the training of resident doctors (both Membership and Fellowship) and nurses/midwives in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology directorate train medical, pharmacy, nursing and midwife students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and other private universities in the Ashanti Region. It also trains foreign medical students who come in for internship in clinical rotations.
