BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate is the second largest Clinical Directorate and an academic department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.  Since 1980 it has served as an academic department for undergraduate medical students following the founding of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Medical Sciences in 1975.  In 1989, it received accreditation for postgraduate training towards the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons. 

In 1994 the directorate became the first in the hospital to produce a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons by examination.

Currently, in addition to service, both undergraduate and postgraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology training as well as internship for doctors, pharmacists and training for midwives and other health personnel are well established in the directorate.

STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP OF MANAGEMENT TEAM

The Directorate is managed by six management team members. The members include Head of Directorate, Lead Clinician, Nurse Manager, Pharmacy Manager, Business Manager and Accountant. the structure of the directorate management is shown below.

The key functions of the directorate are::

  • Provision of general and specialist women’s health care
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate medical training
  • Nursing and midwifery training
  • Research into women’s health problems
