Profile of Board Chairman
Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng is the Chairman of the Board of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital(KATH).
Nana Effah-Apenteng attended Bompata Presbyterian Primary School and Abetifi Presbyterian Boys’ Boarding School from 1951-1958. He attended Mfantsipim Secondary School, Cape Coast from 1959- 1965. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons) Political Science and Masters of Arts, MA in African Studies from University of Ghana, Legon in 1968 and 1970 respectively. He obtained a Diploma in Public Administration in 1974 and Certificate in Diplomacy in 1975 from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Oxford University, respectively.
Prior to his appointment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana in 1970, Nana was a Graduate Assistant at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon in 1968 and later became an Assistant Lecturer at the Institute of African Studies in Legon.
Nana has spent most of his working life at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ghana.
Nana has rich background and experience in foreign and international affairs and has served in various capacities at both local and international levels.
Nana started his career at the Foreign Affairs Ministry as an Assistant Secretary from 1970 and with hard work and dedication rose through the ranks to become the Ambassador and Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of Ghana to the United Nations, New York, from 2000-2007.
From the period 1976-1981, he was the first Secretary/Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Ghana to the UN (New York) and Assistant Secretary of the Multilateral Division of the Economic Relations Department and Personnel and Training Division (Department of Administration) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1982-1986.
From 1986-1993, he was the Counsellor/Minister Counsellor, Embassy of Ghana, Moscow, Acting Head of Mission/Minister-Counsellor/Head of Chancery, Embassy of Ghana, Rome and Director, Estates and General Services Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nana was the Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC, USA as well as Supervising Director, Administration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the period 1993-2000.
Nana also served in many other important leadership positions including Chairman of the 5th (Administrative and Budgetary) Committee of the 56th Session of the UN’s General Assembly from September,2001-2002,Vice-President of the 59th Session of the UN General Assembly as well as one of the 10 Ambassadors to facilitate the preparation of Draft Outcome Document of the 2005 UN World Summit Chairman of the 11th Session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child as well as Representative of Ghana on the UN Security Council including serving as President of the Council in August, 2006.
He was a Special Advisor to His Excellency President John Agyekum Kufour, former President of the Republic of Ghana from 2007-2008. During that period, Nana was appointed a Member, representing Ghana on the 13-Member High Panel set up by the AU Assembly of Heads of State/Government to audit the institutions, bodies and agencies of the AU, under the Chairmanship of Prof. Adebayo Adedeji, former UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
From 2008-2013, Nana was the Chief of Staff of the Panel of Eminent African Personalities established by the African Union(AU) to mediate the 2007/2008 Kenya post-elections crisis which comprised, H.E Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General as Chairman, Ms. Graca Machel (Mandela) and H. E. Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania as Members.
Nana is currently the Paramount Chief of Bompata (Amantena) Traditional Area and among the five Paramount Chiefs representing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs at the National House of Chiefs of Ghana. Nana is a Member of the Otumfuo’s Secretariat at Manhyia Palace. Nana Effah-Apenteng is also serving on other bodies and Boards including the Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Standing Committee of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and the Middle Belt Development Authority.
