The directorate has the following specialties:
·  General Surgery
·  Paediatric Surgery
·  Urology
·  Neurosurgery
·  Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
These specialties operate in the following wards:
·  Ward B1: this is a 38 bed surgical ward and admits all surgical cases. The ward is also usually used as an
examination ward for medical and nursing students.
·  Ward B2: this is a 40 bed ward for males and admits cases in urology, general surgery, neurosurgery
and plastic, burns and reconstructive surgery cases. It is also used sometimes as an examination ward.
·  Ward B3: this is the Paediatric Surgicery ward and has48 cots.
·  Ward C1A is the only female surgical ward in the hospital. It has a bed capacity of 21.
·  Ward C3 & C4 are the female & male official wards in the directorate. They each have a bed capacity of
12.
·  Ward D2C has a bed capacity of 8 and is the ward for plastic, burns and reconstructive surgery cases
for the directorate.

The directorate runs a theatre with 5 operating rooms for both emergency and elective operations in addition to an ultrasoundroom. It also runs six specialist consulting rooms. In addition, there is a breast care centre where breast cases are attended to. A treatment protocol guideline and a draft standard documentation booklet has been developed. It is anticipated that implementation of these documents would enforce rigid standards and minimize patients days without compromising on the quality of health care.

The Head of the Directorate also doubles as the Head of Department of Surgery at the medical school. The lead clinician, in the person of Dr. Michael Ohene-Yeboah, is a lecturer with the medical school and co-ordinates clinical activities in the Directorate of Surgery in the hospital.

·  Anorectic malformations
·  Cleft lip and palate problems
·  Buruli ulcer
·  Strangulated hernias
·  Appendicitis
·  Sigmoid volvulus
·  Thyroid cancers

·  Children surgery international: collaboration in conducting cleft lip and palate surgeries
·  International voluntary Union of Urologists (IVU): collaboration in conducting surgeries to correct
hypospadias and ambiguous genitalia or intersex problems
