PROFILE OF THE PSYCHIATRY UNIT

Introduction.

The Department of Psychiatry is well-renowned for the quality of mental health services it provides to patients all over Ghana and beyond. Since its inception in 1981, the unit gradually progressed into a department and now attends to an average of 8000 patients annually. A great variety of services are provided to clients of all ages with mental health challenges, ranging from advanced specialist psychiatric care, psychotherapy and counselling, psychometric testing and assessments, forensic assessment, electroconvulsive therapy, occupational and art therapy for children with behavioural problems, research, advocacy and media outreach programmes. Specialist out-patient clinics run on weekdays and a 24 hour 11-bed capacity ward caters for patients requiring hospital admission.

The Department is located between the A block and the specialist out-patient consulting rooms, near the main entrance of the hospital.
